Official means the platform's own help, developer or ads page. Secondary means Sprout Social, Hootsuite or Buffer, used only where the platform publishes no number or blocks automated reads. Each mark links to its source.
Most posts fit one of four shapes. Learn these and you rarely need the table:
1:1 square (1080 x 1080) works in the feed on almost every platform.
4:5 portrait (1080 x 1350) is the tallest feed image LinkedIn allows, and it is the tallest ratio Instagram's API accepts.
9:16 vertical (1080 x 1920) is the shape for Instagram Stories and Reels covers, TikTok and YouTube Shorts thumbnails.
1.91:1 landscape is the link preview shape: at least 1200 x 627 on LinkedIn, 1200 x 630 recommended on Facebook.
For everything else, the table below lists 59 formats across seven platforms, from YouTube channel banners to TikTok ad profile images.
What changed recently
LinkedIn Page covers are now 1512 x 256, per LinkedIn Help. Many guides still list older sizes.
YouTube thumbnails are now 3840 x 2160 recommended, with a minimum width of 640 and up to 50 MB when uploaded from a computer (2 MB from mobile).
Instagram's profile grid shows 3:4 thumbnails, a switch Buffer dates to January 2025, so the edges of square posts are cropped on your profile.
Official numbers vs best guesses
Every row says where its number came from. Official means the platform's own help, developer or ads pages: LinkedIn Help, YouTube Help, Twitter's developer docs, Meta's developer docs and ads guide. Secondary means a size from Sprout Social, Hootsuite or Buffer, used only when the platform does not publish a number or blocks automated checks. That is the case for Twitter's profile photo and header and for most of TikTok's organic sizes.
We would rather show you a labeled guess than pass it off as a rule. If a size looks out of date, the source link is the fastest way to confirm it. Need deeper detail for one platform? See the LinkedIn image size guide and the Twitter image size guide.
One image, many platforms
Design at 1080 pixels wide. It is the recommended width on LinkedIn and a common size on Instagram and Threads.
Keep text in the middle. Covers and banners crop differently on phones; YouTube's banner safe area is 1235 x 338.
Export JPG for photos, PNG for text. Facebook's help page says PNG looks better for logos and text.
Name files by platform and size. A file called linkedin-cover-1584x396.png saves guessing next time.
Refresh link previews after a fix. Platforms store preview images, so check the page again with the link preview checker after you change one.
Then plan when each one goes out. The social media holiday calendar lists dates worth posting on. VoiceMoat works on Twitter and LinkedIn: audenAI drafts the posts in your voice from your own content, and Schedule lines them up.
