The right Twitter header size. With every crop marked.

The Twitter header size is 1500 x 500 pixels, but your profile photo and narrow phone screens hide parts of it. This maker marks both, so your design survives every screen. Add a background and a line of text, then download.

The dashed circles are where your profile photo sits on a computer and on a 360 px phone (twitter.com). Grey bands can be cropped: 60 px at the top and bottom, and the sides on narrow phones.
The dashed box is the text safe area. Guides are not part of the download.

No watermark. The JPG is kept under 2 MB. Upload it from Edit profile on Twitter, then check it on your phone.

Twitter header size and specs

  • Header: 1500 x 500 pixels recommended, a 3:1 shape.

  • Profile photo: 400 x 400 pixels recommended, JPEG, GIF or PNG, up to 2MB.

  • Cropping: Twitter's help center warns that up to 60 pixels at the top and bottom of the header can be cut off, depending on the monitor and browser.

Those come from Twitter's own help center. It does not give a file size limit for headers on the pages we checked, and other guides disagree, so keep the file small: a well-compressed JPG under 2MB is a safe target.

Where your profile photo covers the header

The profile photo sits over the lower-left of the header, and how much it hides depends on the screen. twitterapi.io measured the web version at five screen widths and mapped the avatar back onto a 1500 x 500 file:

  • Desktop (1280 pixels wide): the whole header shows, and the avatar covers about x 40 to 381, from y 329 down.

  • Phones (360 to 430 pixels wide): the sides get trimmed, leaving roughly x 193 to 1307 visible on the narrowest screen, and the avatar shifts right, reaching about x 496.

  • All together: keep the block from x 0 to 500 and y 310 down clear of text and faces.

Their suggested safe zone is x 200 to 1300 and y 60 to 440, minus that avatar block, and the maker draws all of it on the canvas. The iPhone and Android apps were not part of that test, so check your header in the app after uploading.

What makes a good Twitter header

  • Say what you post about. Your bio is short. The header can say in five words what your feed is for.

  • Keep the background calm. Busy photos make small text unreadable on a phone.

  • Match your profile photo. Pick colors that work with your avatar sitting on top.

  • Skip the URL. Nobody can click it. Put the link in your bio instead.

Upload the file from Edit profile. If your text looks cut off on a phone but fine on a laptop, move it toward the middle rather than up: in the measurements above, phones trim the sides, while some monitors and browsers trim the top and bottom. Text in the center survives both.

The header gets the look. Your posts get the follow.

Someone lands on your profile from a reply or a repost. They see the header, read the bio, then scroll. The posts below decide whether they follow. VoiceMoat helps you keep those strong: audenAI learns from your own content and drafts posts, threads and replies in your voice.
