The Twitter image size for every format: pixels, aspect ratio, file size and file types, with each number marked official or secondary, so you know which ones Twitter actually publishes. Checked October 2026.
Official means the platform's own help, developer or ads page. Secondary means Sprout Social, Hootsuite or Buffer, used only where the platform publishes no number or blocks automated reads. Each mark links to its source.

Twitter image size for posts
Twitter's own developer docs set the hard limits: you can attach up to 4 photos, 1 animated GIF or 1 video to a post. Images can be up to 5 MB as JPG, PNG, GIF or WEBP, and animated GIFs up to 15 MB, ideally 1280 x 1080 or smaller.
What Twitter does not publish is a recommended pixel size for images in the feed. Popular guides disagree, listing 1600 x 900, 1200 x 675 or 1280 x 720. They agree on the shapes, though: 16:9 landscape or 1:1 square are the safest, and at least 1080 pixels wide keeps them sharp. We show those as secondary, because no Twitter page states them.
Twitter profile picture and header size
Twitter's help pages do not allow automated checks, so these two come from guides that match each other (Sprout Social, Hootsuite and Buffer, 2026):
Profile photo: 400 x 400 pixels, 1:1, shown as a circle, up to 2 MB.
Header: 1500 x 500 pixels, 3:1, up to 5 MB. The Twitter header maker builds one at the right size.
Video, GIFs and ad images
Video: 1280 x 720 landscape, 720 x 1280 portrait or 720 x 720 square recommended, MP4 with H264 and AAC. Up to 8 GB and 20 minutes on a standard account; 16 GB and 125 minutes with X Premium.
Animated GIF: up to 15 MB, one per post.
Website card ad image: at least 800 pixels wide, 1:1 or 1.91:1, up to 3 MB, as BMP, JPEG or PNG.
Link previews: Twitter's old cards documentation is no longer online, so we do not list a pixel size. Test a link with the link preview checker.
How to prepare an image for Twitter
Export at least 1080 pixels wide. Smaller images can look soft on large phone screens.
Stay under 5 MB. Larger images are rejected, so compress big photos before you upload.
Use JPG for photos and PNG for graphics with text. Both are accepted, and PNG keeps text edges crisp.
Keep the subject in the middle. Landscape and square shapes both survive a center crop better than an off-center subject.
The picture is free. The words are not.
Attached media counts as 0 characters, so an image never eats into your 280. Every word does, and every link counts as 23 characters however long it is. Check a draft with the Twitter character counter.
An image gets attention; the text decides whether people follow. VoiceMoat learns your voice from your own content, and audenAI drafts tweets and threads that sound like you, ready to pair with the image. When it is ready, Schedule posts it at the right time.
