What a tweet preview catches that the compose box does not

The compose box is built for typing. The timeline is where the post gets read: your photo, name and handle on one line with the time, the text, any photos or link card under it, and the action row with reply, repost, like, views, bookmark and share. A Twitter post preview puts your draft in that frame. That is how you catch a line break in the wrong place, a photo that crops the part that matters, or an opener that is really your second sentence.

How Twitter counts to 280

  • 280 for most accounts. That is the standard limit for a post.

  • It is a weighted count. Most characters count as 1, every link counts as 23 because Twitter wraps it in its t.co shortener, and every emoji counts as 2. Photos and GIFs do not count at all. The Twitter character counter does the same math and splits a thread when you run over.

  • X Premium goes to 25,000. Subscribers can publish longer posts, and everyone can read them.

Where Show more cuts a long post

When Twitter launched longer posts in February 2023, the timeline showed the first 280 characters and a link to expand the rest. Treat 280 as the line that matters even on a long post: it is what people read before they decide to tap. It matters for mentions too. Twitter's help center says an account you mention after the first 280 characters is not notified, so name people early.

Photos and link cards in the timeline

  • Up to 4 photos. JPEG, PNG or GIF, and photos can be up to 5MB each.

  • Single photos show uncropped on mobile. Since May 2021 the iOS and Android apps show a single image in its own aspect ratio. Very wide or very tall images still get a crop around the center. Sizes for every format are in the Twitter image size guide.

  • Link cards are mostly image. Since January 2024 a link card shows the page's image with the headline in a small box in its bottom left corner, and the site name on a line below. Check how a page's card renders with the Twitter card validator.

A clean preview, then a post worth previewing

A preview fixes the packaging: the length, the line breaks, the photo crop. The harder part is the content inside it, and that is what VoiceMoat works on. audenAI, the brain inside VoiceMoat, learns from your own posts, drafts tweets and threads in your voice, and checks drafts so they read like you. Schedule then posts them at the right time. See how it starts in Studio.
