Count your tweet like Twitter does. Then split the rest.

Paste a draft and this Twitter character counter shows the count Twitter will see, using its own rules: every link as 23, every emoji as 2, and Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters as 2. Over 280? Split it into a numbered thread in one tap.

How this Twitter character counter counts

Twitter does not count one per letter, so a plain letter counter is often wrong. This tool follows Twitter's published counting rules and its open-source counting library:

  • Most characters count as 1. Letters, numbers, spaces and common punctuation in Latin and many other alphabets.

  • Every link counts as 23, however long it is, because Twitter wraps links in its t.co shortener.

  • Every emoji counts as 2, including skin tones and combined emoji such as families.

  • Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count as 2, so a post in those languages holds 140 of them.

  • Styled “font” letters count as 2. Bold or italic text from a font generator takes double the room.

  • Accented letters count once. Twitter normalizes text first, so é counts as 1 however it was typed.

  • Media and auto-added reply @mentions are free. Attached images and video count as 0, and the @names Twitter adds at the start of a reply do not count. Any @mention you type yourself does.

Why other counters give you a different number

A plain counter counts what it sees. Paste a long article link and it might count 90 characters where Twitter counts 23, so you cut words you did not need to cut. Add three emoji and a plain counter may say 3 where Twitter says 6. Post in Japanese and the plain count is half the real one. The gap runs both ways, which is why a draft that looks fine in a notes app can still go over in the compose box.

The Twitter character limit for free and Premium accounts

A standard post holds 280 characters, the tweet character limit most people know. X Premium subscribers can publish longer posts, up to 25,000 characters according to X's help center, and anyone can read them. One catch before you go long: if you mention someone after the first 280 characters, they are not notified. Switch this counter to Premium mode to check a long post against 25,000.

Your profile has limits too: a bio holds 160 characters, a display name 50, and a username 15.

When to split into a thread instead

If a draft runs past 280 and you are not on Premium, or you want each point to land on its own, split it. Each part should stand alone: one idea per post, the strongest line first, and nothing cut mid-sentence. The split button here breaks at the end of a sentence and numbers each part, and the Twitter thread maker goes further when you want help shaping the whole thread. If one line needs more punch, the Twitter font generator styles it and shows what that costs in characters.

Counting is the easy part

Fitting 280 characters tells you a post is allowed, not that it is good. VoiceMoat is a Personal Brand OS for that second part. audenAI, the brain inside it, learns from your own content and drafts posts, threads and replies in your voice, then checks drafts so they sound like you. Open your draft in VoiceMoat from this tool and audenAI can tighten it to fit without losing how you sound. Need a starting point? The AI tweet generator gives you five angles on one topic, and Studio is where drafts become a posting habit. Posting on LinkedIn too? Use the LinkedIn character counter.
