One LinkedIn character counter. Six limits, each one sourced.

Pick the field, paste your text, and this LinkedIn character counter shows how much room is left: a post, a comment, your headline, your About section, an article or a connection note. Every limit links to where the number comes from, so you are not trusting a guess.

Every limit this LinkedIn character counter checks

LinkedIn gives each field its own limit. These are the six this tool checks, and where each number comes from:

  • Post: 3,000 characters. From LinkedIn Help, which suggests an article for anything longer.

  • Comment: 1,250 characters. LinkedIn Help lists 1,250 for comments in groups, and independent testing in 2026 found the same cap on feed comments.

  • Headline: 220 characters. From LinkedIn's own talent blog.

  • About section: 2,600 characters. Also from LinkedIn's talent blog.

  • Article: 125,000 characters. From LinkedIn Help.

  • Connection note: 200 characters, or 300 with Premium. From LinkedIn Help.

Limits do change, so each one in the tool links to its source.

What counts as a character on LinkedIn

Everything you type takes room: letters, spaces, line breaks and punctuation, plus hashtags and @mentions, which are typed text too. Two things take more room than they look:

  • Emoji. Independent testing by AuthoredUp found a standard emoji counts as 2, and flags or skin tones can take more.

  • Bold and italic “fonts”. Styled letters from a formatter are stored as two units each, so a bold hook uses the limit up twice as fast. This counter counts them that way, so you keep some headroom.

The LinkedIn character limit is a ceiling, not a target

A 3,000-character post is allowed, but the feed shows only the opening lines before “see more”, and that opening decides whether anyone clicks. Put the point first, then earn the rest. The LinkedIn post preview shows where that cut falls. The same thinking applies to your headline: 220 characters is room for who you help and how, not a list of every title you have held. The LinkedIn headline analyzer scores what you put there.

Connection notes: 200 characters, used well

The connection note is the tightest of the six: 200 characters on a free account, 300 with Premium, and free accounts can add a note to only a few requests each month. That makes every note count. Say who you are, why them and why now, in that order, and skip the pitch. If you get stuck, the LinkedIn connection message generator drafts one that fits.

Room to say it, and a voice to say it in

A counter tells you what fits. It cannot tell you whether a post sounds like you or like everyone else in the feed. That is what VoiceMoat is for. It is a Personal Brand OS, and audenAI, the brain inside it, learns from your own LinkedIn content, then drafts posts and comments in your voice and checks drafts so they sound like you. The Chrome extension drafts comments right inside LinkedIn, within the 1,250-character cap. To try it on a post first, use the free LinkedIn post generator.
