What a hashtag generator is for now

A hashtag files a post under a topic, so people who search or tap that topic can find it. That is the whole job. Hashtags do not push a post to more people on their own, and the platforms have started saying so out loud: Adam Mosseri, who runs Instagram, has said hashtags do not increase reach, while calling them a good way to tell people what a post is about. So the useful question is not “which tags go viral” but “which few tags describe this post to the people looking for it”. That is what this hashtag generator answers.

How many hashtags each platform suggests

  • Instagram: up to 5 per caption on posts and reels, a cap Instagram began rolling out in December 2025.

  • Twitter: Twitter recommends no more than 2 per post. More are allowed, but each one spends part of a 280-character post.

  • LinkedIn: LinkedIn's creator team advised no more than 3 per post, and hashtags have lost features there since, so 3 is a ceiling, not a target. The LinkedIn hashtag generator covers the details.

  • YouTube: up to 3 hashtags from the description can show by the video title, and if a video has more than 60 hashtags, YouTube ignores all of them.

  • TikTok: TikTok publishes no fixed number, so the ready set stays at 3 to 5 tags that describe the video.

Broad, niche and specific: why tags come in three groups

Every suggestion lands in one of three groups, because a good set mixes them:

  • Broad. The big topic, like #Marketing. Lots of posts, so yours sinks fast, but it tells everyone what the post is about.

  • Niche. The community, like #B2BMarketing. Fewer posts and a closer audience.

  • Specific. This exact post, like #PricingPage. Small, but the people who search it want exactly that.

The ready set takes the strongest tags across the groups, up to the platform's number. Pick “Wider reach” or “Tight niche” to shift the balance.

Hashtag mistakes that quietly cost you

  • Spaces and punctuation. Twitter says a hashtag with spaces or punctuation will not work properly, and YouTube says hashtags contain no spaces. Join the words: #ContentMarketing.

  • The same block on every post. Tags should describe this post, not your whole account.

  • Tags instead of a point. If the caption needs ten tags to explain what it is about, fix the caption.

  • Hard-to-read tags. Capitalize each word. #ContentMarketing is easier to read than #contentmarketing.

Hashtags help people find a post. Content keeps them there.

Once a tag brings someone to your post, the post has to earn the follow. That is the part VoiceMoat works on: audenAI learns from your own content on Twitter or LinkedIn, drafts posts in your voice and checks drafts so they sound like you. Draft the caption with the social media post generator, get tweet-sized sets from the Twitter hashtag generator, then see which posts actually grew your account in Analytics.
