Why use it

An outlier is the most misleading thing an account produces. The temptation is to copy the visible part, which is the words, and the words are often the part that had least to do with it. The job is not to explain the post, it is to find the repeatable half.

What it does

It checks the post is actually an outlier against that account's own median, in rate rather than raw count. Then it rules out the boring explanations before crediting the writing: a large account resharing early, the subject being in the news, a format the account had not used before. Skipping that step is how people end up rewriting the same post for a month.

What you get

• A check that it outperformed at all, rather than arriving in a month the account grew

• The six boring explanations, ruled in or out before the writing gets any credit

• A split between what is repeatable and what depended on somebody else's audience

• One testable hypothesis, and what would count as it being wrong

What it will not do

It will not tell you why the post worked with certainty. Nobody can see the ranking, and a confident causal story built on one post is fiction with numbers attached.
