The LinkedIn connection message limit, and why it helps

LinkedIn lets you add a note to a connection request, and the note can be up to 200 characters. Without Premium you can personalize up to three connection requests a month. Premium members can personalize all of them, although connection request limits still apply.

Three a month is not many, which is the reason to get each one right. Two hundred characters is about two short sentences. There is no room for a life story, a pitch or “I hope this finds you well”, and that is a good thing. A note that says who you are, why this person, and nothing else is easy to say yes to.

What a good LinkedIn connection request message says

  • Why them. One specific detail: their post, their talk, a mutual connection, a company you both worked at.

  • Why you. A few words on who you are, if your headline does not already say it.

  • No ask. Save the pitch, the job request or the meeting for after they accept, if you need it at all.

Every run returns three notes in three tones, one direct, one warm and one curious, each with its character count so you know it fits before you paste it.

Notes for the reasons people actually connect

The reason picker changes what the note leads with:

  • Met them: names where, so they place you straight away.

  • Liked their post: refers to the post itself, not a vague “love your content”.

  • Same field: names the shared work instead of “expanding my network”.

  • Hiring or job search: says it plainly, with no hard ask in the first message.

  • Project idea: says what you would like to talk about, in one line.

The generator only uses details you give it. Leave the details out and the note stays general instead of pretending to know the person.

After they accept

The note gets you in. What you post decides whether they stay interested. Make your profile worth the visit with the LinkedIn headline generator, and keep showing up in their comments with the LinkedIn comment generator. A thoughtful comment on someone's post before you connect also gives your note something real to point to. And if you want a conversation once they accept, send a short message that picks up from your note instead of starting over.

Stay visible after the note with VoiceMoat

A new connection is a chance to be seen, not a relationship yet. VoiceMoat helps you turn it into one. audenAI learns from your own content and drafts LinkedIn posts and comments in your voice, and the Chrome extension drafts comments right inside LinkedIn, so engaging with new connections takes seconds instead of a blank box. You read every draft and post it yourself.
