How we picked the best tweets of all time
"Best" here means the tweets that mattered: record holders, posts that broke news, moments that moved markets or culture, and a few that simply became part of how the internet talks. The list spans 2006 to 2026 and covers news, politics from both sides, sport, culture, tech and brands.
Every tweet's text was checked against a published source, such as TIME and Fortune's tweet embeds, The Guardian, NBC News or Wikipedia's lists of the most liked and most retweeted tweets. Where sources disagree on a detail, or a tweet was deleted, the entry says so. Dates are given as posted in the author's time zone where known, because several famous tweets land on different days depending on where you were.
The record holders: most liked and most retweeted tweets
Most liked tweet ever: the August 28, 2020 post from Chadwick Boseman's family announcing his death, at about 6.6 million likes.
Most retweeted tweet ever: Yusaku Maezawa's January 5, 2019 cash giveaway, at about 3.5 million retweets.
Earlier record holders: Barack Obama's "Four more years." (2012), passed by Ellen DeGeneres's Oscars selfie in 2014, then Carter Wilkerson's "HELP ME PLEASE. A MAN NEEDS HIS NUGGS" in 2017.
Most liked at its time: Barack Obama's August 2017 Charlottesville tweet quoting Nelson Mandela.
Most liked athlete tweet: Erling Haaland's "Well well well" in July 2026.
Figures are from Wikipedia's lists as of mid-2026 and keep moving.
